How to Find Your Router's IP Address (Any Device)

To change Wi-Fi settings, set up port forwarding, or update firmware, you need to log into your router — and for that you need its IP address, known as the default gateway. Here's how to find it on every platform.

Try the usual suspects first

Most home routers use one of a handful of addresses. Type these into your browser:

Windows

Open Command Prompt and run ipconfig — read the Default Gateway line under your active adapter.

Mac

System Settings → Network → your connection → Details → TCP/IP — the Router field. Or in Terminal: netstat -nr | grep default.

iPhone / iPad

Settings → Wi-Fi → tap ⓘ on your network — the Router field shows the gateway address.

Android

Settings → Wi-Fi → tap your network → Advanced — look for Gateway (some skins hide it; the router app or a network-info app shows it too).

Logging in

  1. Enter the gateway IP in your browser's address bar (e.g. http://192.168.1.1).
  2. Sign in — credentials are often printed on the router's label. Common defaults like admin/admin should be changed immediately if still active.
  3. From there you can manage Wi-Fi, DHCP reservations, port forwarding and firmware updates.

Router IP vs public IP

Don't confuse the gateway address with your public IP — the router's private address only exists inside your home. The address the internet sees is on the router's WAN side, assigned by your ISP: check it anytime on our homepage. If the two ever look similar in form, remember: 192.168.x.x is always private.

Frequently asked questions

My router's IP doesn't load a login page. Why?

Verify you're on the router's Wi-Fi (not mobile data), try http:// explicitly, and confirm the gateway via the OS methods above. Some ISP routers use a companion app instead of a web page.

What if I forgot my router password?

Check the label for factory credentials. If they've been changed and lost, hold the reset button ~10 seconds to factory-reset — you'll need to reconfigure Wi-Fi afterwards.
